THE STORY: HOW MOTHERS FRAGRANCES INCENSE IS MADE

A Tradition Rooted in Ancient India

The story of Mothers Fragrances begins thousands of years ago, when incense was not just a fragrance—it was a spiritual tool. Ancient Vedic rishis discovered that each scent held a unique vibration. Like colour or sound, fragrance could influence mood, clear the mind, and elevate consciousness.

From these early discoveries grew the original science of natural incense, crafted entirely from the earth’s own materials:

  • flowers

  • bark

  • roots

  • resins

  • herbs

  • sacred woods

When burned, these ingredients released subtle aromatic compounds that supported meditation, healing, and ritual.

This is the origin of the incense we strive to protect today.

Natural Incense Through History

Across civilisations—from Egypt to India to Japan—incense was used in temples, ceremonies, and daily rituals.

Most early incense was simple: the resin of a tree burned over coals, such as the frankincense and myrrh we still know today.

But India refined incense into an artform.

Over centuries, artisans discovered that blending natural ingredients—woods, flowers, spices, and oils—created fragrances with depth, complexity, and purpose. This blending process became known as the masala method, a technique that creates incense from raw plant materials rather than chemical dips.

Today, it is considered the gold standard of true natural incense making.

The Masala Method: The Heart of Mothers Fragrances

Unlike modern incense, which is often dipped into synthetic perfume oils, Mothers Fragrances incense is made the traditional way—using the age-old masala method.

This method blends powdered natural ingredients into a soft aromatic dough that is rolled by hand onto sustainable bamboo sticks.

Our natural ingredients include:

  • sandalwood powder

  • wood powders

  • dried leaves

  • flowers

  • roots

  • gum resins

  • natural essential oils

  • crushed spices

Each ingredient plays a specific role in the fragrance profile:

Orris root adds sweetness

Cinnamon, clove, nutmeg & sage add warmth and depth

Ambrette seeds provide a natural musk note

Resins like benzoin & labdanum act as fixatives (no synthetics needed)

Charred coconut husk supports delicate floral scents like jasmine

These are the “nature’s spices” that create the rich, layered scents Mothers Fragrances is known for.

And because these sticks are never dipped in synthetic solvents or oils, they burn cleaner and produce very little smoke—making them ideal for indoor use.

Why Most Commercial Incense Changed — And Why We Didn’t

As industrialisation grew, incense changed.
Cheap production replaced tradition.

Most commercial incense today is made by:

  1. Pressing sawdust or charcoal into sticks

  2. Dipping them into synthetic perfumes

  3. Adding chemical fixatives for stronger scent

  4. Using solvents to speed up drying

This method is inexpensive—but removes the soul of incense entirely.

The subtle spiritual quality of natural incense is lost.
The complexity of botanicals disappears.
What remains is a strongly scented, chemical-heavy stick.

Mothers Fragrances was created specifically to bring back what was nearly lost.

Our Mission: Reviving Honest, Natural Incense

We didn’t want to imitate the past—we wanted to restore it in a way that still feels relevant and beautiful today.

After years of research and experiments, we rediscovered how to blend “nature’s spices” in the authentic masala style. It’s slower. It's more expensive. It requires true craftsmanship.

But it creates incense that is:

  • clean-burning

  • soft and subtle

  • natural-smelling

  • uplifting

  • safe for everyday use

This is incense made with intention, not shortcuts.

The Fair-Trade Heart Behind the Craft
